Mission Moment: Andrew’s Story

A young adult with blonde hair and a black leather jacket stands in front of pine trees.

By the time he was eight years old, Andrew Lawler had lived in five foster homes before being adopted. Always with the dream of attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and being an actor, Andrew struggled in school, eventually dropping out and finding himself living at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley when he was nineteen years old. While in a meeting with his advisor at the Mission, a Goodwill job coach called and shared that he had three spots in the next Work Adjustment cohort. Andrew jumped at the chance and was soon working steadily in Goodwill’s central processing plant. Within a few months, he was asked to apply for a full-time position. He got that job and was promoted within a few weeks.

Andrew now lives in his own apartment and is on track to earn his high school diploma. As a fan of all comic book movies, Andrew quotes Professor X: “Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, it doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” Andrew says, “This quote is important to me because I have made many mistakes, but I always seem to get on the right track and press towards my goals.”
